I figured I'd use this post to give a little news about our current project. People have been asking when the next Dark Breed novel comes out ( thank you for asking!) and while Book 2 in the series, Bedeviled, is scheduled for release in January, we have a smaller treat hitting ebooks this fall. An untitled novella for Avon Impulse is in the works. Yes, Kyana will make an appearance, but no, it doesn't center around her. Instead, it revolves around an ex Member of the Order of Ancients and takes place the day the gates of He'll opened. A little prequel to Ascension, if you will.

In case you haven't heard the news, I've just signed a new four-book contract with Harper Collins/Avon! The contract includes the next two Feral Warriors books and the first two in a brand new Urban Fantasy Romance series tentatively titled Vampire City. And, yes, this one's about vampires.

This series is going to be a little different from the ones I've done in the past. While it's still definitely romance, the hero and heroine aren't going to find their HEA (happily ever after) in one book. It's going to take awhile. Five books, maybe?

I love this story and I'm having great fun writing it...except for one thing. The vampire hero refuses to tell me his name. I'm three-quarters of the way through the book and I still don't know what it is. I keep giving him names--fifteen so far. And he keeps shaking his head with a small, dangerous smile, and I know I haven't hit upon the right one, yet. I'm beginning to think I'm going to call him He-Who-Has-No-Name. Or Fred.

Several months ago, I asked for name suggestions. And while I couldn't reveal why at the time, they were for this vampire. I'm going to do it again. And in honor of difficult heroes, I'm giving away 5 signed copies of RAPTURE UNTAMED (the story of a pain-in-the-ass Feral Warrior) to the five people who give me names I put before the Fanged One. The names can be normal, unusual, weird, anything at all.

On another note: If you haven't heard, Avon has put the e-version of my Feral Warriors book, OBSESSION UNTAMED, on sale for $1.99 for a month. And DESIRE UNTAMED is priced at only $4.99. If you haven't tried my books, now's the time to snap a couple of them up cheap.

Monday morning I left Oklahoma with Seattle as my goal destination. I could have made the drive in three days (maybe two) but I decided to take my time and see some sights. Here are some pictures from the trip...

I have to say that I live in a spectacularly beautiful country and, living in and around cities, it's so easy to forget how much empty wilderness still exists. I'm in Seattle now and recovering before the apartment hunting begins.

Salvation is Coming my Friends...

Hey guys!

It's been a bit since I posted since apparently I totally forgot last month! Sorry! I have been in the writing cave and well, the family does tend to need my attention sometimes...and I forget some importat things like posting on my fave blog!

Not today....I have something very cool to share with you all! I'm officially posting the book trailer to my upcoming release, His Darkest Salvation. There's lots to celebrate.

This book ties up a lot of loose ends that have been a part of the first two books...and you'll get a glimpse of what's in store for my next series League of Guardians. The first book, Wicked Road to Hell is Declan O'Hara's book and I can't wait for you all to read it!

But Salvation was such a great book to write. Julian is so tortured, missing part of his soul so he's kind of nasty. I believe some of you will think he's a bit of an ass...and he is but the man can't help it! He needs his soul put back together. Luckily, Jaden DaCosta is going to help.

And they'll ya know, try to save the world while they're at it! Here's the trailer....

Unhealthy Obsession?

It’s just after midnight and I should be heading to bed, or at the very least settling in with a book to relax.

Instead, I’m surfing the net and obsessing about all the little things that I love. And I’m wondering if it’s unhealthy. I mean, everyone needs a little distraction in life. A little escape. Most of the time, I escape into the worlds of my own creation, but sometimes I need someone else’s world.

Obsession #1: Batman

My long-time love affair with Bruce Wayne started when I was young, watching the Adam West/Burt Ward Batman and Robin show. At that time, I loved Robin, but then I was very young and foolish; not realizing the wonderfulness that is the complexity of Bruce Wayne. My love cooled over the years until the early ‘90s when the Adventures of Batman and Robin cartoon was released. The art was beautiful and the stories were surprisingly rich for a 30-minute afternoon cartoon show. I fell in love all over again. Batman had taken on a gritty, darker feel. He had finally become the tortured soul that most of us have come to equate with Batman.

I love Bruce Wayne/Batman because he doesn’t have any super powers. He’s just a man. Every night he pushes himself to the absolute limit while walking a fine line between good and evil. Handsome, strong, confident, determined, dedicated, brilliant, loyal, and secretly, very compassionate, Bruce Wayne makes my little heart stammer in my chest. The new DC Universe reboot, which will launch in September, has me concerned about what they will do to the Batman canon, but I know they will not change the soul of Batman.

I own a large collection of comics, graphic novels, movies, figures, and cartoons. One dream would be to publish my own Batman story.

Obsession #2: Video games

With E3 in full swing and new video game news being updated almost every minute, I’m frothing a little at the mouth right now. I started, like many people, with Mario Bros. on the original Nintendo. It didn’t work out well. However, I later became a PlayStation addict when I discovered the beauty of the Final Fantasy games. SquareEnix (once SquareSoft) is the creator of the Final Fantasy saga and has always been on the cutting edge of both exquisite graphics and mind-blowing stories. As a writer, I have always been addicted to a great story, where others are into killer game play. For me, it’s always been about the characters and the stories, which the Final Fantasy series has always delivered.

In fact, the only time I have cried at a video game was a Final Fantasy game! Yes, I cried and I had even known how it was going to end before I played the game. Final Fantasy VII shook the gaming world when it was released so long ago. Just a few years ago, they released a prequel (Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core), in which there was only one way for it to end. Despite that, I fell so deeply in love with the characters that I cried at the end.

I’ve noticed in the past few years, game developers have started paying more and more attention to the quality of their storytelling. Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series has been equated to watching a brilliant action movie. And Ubisoft’s Assasson’s Creed series has proven to be a graphically lush dream.

But the point to all my rambling is that Batman and the brilliant storytelling team at SquareEnix has not only provided me a valuable escape from the world, but it has taught me a lot about storytelling and character development. More often than naught, it more than a story about a journey to accomplish some great deed or vanquish some evil foe, it more about the journey into one’s soul to learn more about oneself.

The other day I learned that our Aussie Borders stores will all be closing along with all the Angus and Robertson bookstores in Australia. The parent company has gone bust. This is the largest book chain in Australia and it really saddens me to see this. Then I was speaking to the manager of one of my favourite independent stores for Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror Galaxy Books which has had to downsize and move to a different location to survive. This makes me sad. One of my favourite things in the world to do is to go into a bookstore and browse the shelves. And I have to admit – if they are selling my book – then I am sure to get a bit of a thrill seeing it there. Not to mention all my friends books as well. So is this going to become a thing of the past.

In a way it doesn’t surprise me. The world is changing. More and more we are moving into to a virtual world. Another factor for us in Australia is that the price of books here is huge. We pay between $19.99 and $22.00 for a mass market paperback; $22 - $30 for trade paperbacks and hard covers can be from anywhere $35 - $49.99. Places like Galaxy discount do them and I do liek to suppor the independant stores. But when you compare this to paying $8 on the Book Depository and not having to pay for postage, you can see why a lot of people are moving to buying their books online. That and the strength of the Australian dollar, people are buying more than just books, it's CDs, DVDs, even electronics, clothing, shoes - you name it. Retail stores all over Australia are crying foul and are calling for the government to impose tariffs. They are lamenting the loss of income and business to the internet. But in this time of a tough economy, people are looking to save money where they can.

This made me review my own book buying process. I buy most of my physical books from my local independent store Intrigue Bookstore owned by the very lovely Margaret who has been a wonderful support of my books. I now also own a Kindle and I’m finding the eReader very convenient. Even if I have the paperback, I find I might even buy the Kindle version as well, especially if it is going through a promo period.

Which segues nicely into my announcement. HarperVoyager are discounting the ebook version of DEATH’S SWEET EMBRACE to $2.99 from Tuesday 7 June until 7 July. To celebrate this I am going to give away 3 Kindle versions of the ebook (it is the only format I know how to gift). But I am told it will be the same price everywhere including Amazon, Nook, iBook, Kobo, Sony and other ebook sellers.
