Tricks, Treats, and Travel

ETA: Randomizer has spoken and the winner of an Arc of HAUNTED BY YOUR TOUCH is Melissa from Books & Things! Melissa's comment was: "Pathetically not doing too much. :P Hopefully reading an ARC. ;) (hey, it was worth a try lol). ~Melissa (Books and Things)"

Yes it was worth a try, because Randomizer chose you. Congrats! Please email me at frostlight1 AT yahoo DOT com with your full name and shipping address. To everyone else, thanks for playing, and hope all of you have a wonderful Halloween, whatever you're doing :).

This blog is going up late because I've had one of those days where every time I try to sit down and write, something comes up that needs my immediate attention. In my last post, I talked about how one of the things I love about October is the continual presence of horror movies on TV. Another thing I love is, of course, Halloween. Normally my husband and I spend All Hallow's Eve handing out candy to trick-or-treaters and watching - you guessed it! :) - horror movies. This year, we're doing something very different by celebrating Halloween weekend in New Orleans. I've got my gothic vampire costume all ready for the Memnoch Ressurection Ball hosted by the Vampire Lestat Fan Club, plus I intend to go on some haunted tours of the French Quarter, tour some of the famous cemeteries, and of course, eat beignets (it should be a crime to go to New Orleans without eating beignets, if you ask me). I can't wait. New Orleans has long been one of my favorite cities, and getting to visit there during one of my favorite holidays is a huge Travel Treat for me.

Things can't be all smiles all the time, sadly. Hearing case after case of censorship involving reading material in high schools has been pretty upsetting. I think most people agree that parents have the right to decide what their own children should or should not read. Parents who want to decide what everyone else's kids should or shouldn't read based on - often - no firsthand knowledge of the book itself (because they've never read it, or in some cases, the book hasn't even been written yet) however, is depressing. Making only strictly sanitized books available to teens under the pretext of "see no evil = speak no evil = no evil will ever happen to these kids!" just doesn't seem like a logical formula. I know evil happens even in "nice" areas, and even if it is never spoken of. Another author blogged about how her children attend a school where school shootings are purported to be nothing more than media-led myth. Columbine? Didn't happen according to many of these students. But sadly, pretending unpleasant things don't exist doesn't form a protective shield over anyone (if only it did). Censorship is a Trick, all right, and it's a nasty one played on students, teachers, and parents in areas where access to books or knowledge is restricted based on the uninformed opinions of a few instead of the knowledgeable consensus of many.

Back to more pleasant subjects. New Orleans isn't the only place I'll be traveling to this month. On Wednesday I leave for New York, where I'll be attending ComiCon. If you're in the New York city area and you're interested in meeting me, please check out my schedule . In addition to the panels and the signing, you'll also find me trying to score an autograph from Bruce give-me-some-sugar-baby! Campbell, and Diana Gabaldon, just to name a few. Lots of awesome people will be at ComiCon, so hope to see some of you there!

And I'll close this blog with a treat. Leave a comment telling me what you're planning to do this Halloween, and I'll enter you in a drawing for an Arc (advance reading copy) of the HAUNTED BY YOUR TOUCH anthology, releasing October 26th. My story in this anthology is set in a new world of demons, partial demons, and fallen angels. Shayla Black and Sharie Koehler also have wonderful paranormal stories in HAUNTED BY YOUR TOUCH. Winner will be chosen by Randomizer, and international entries are welcome. Be sure to leave your name, because it's hard to pick "anonymous" as a winner. Contest opens now and closes at 9:00am tomorrow EST. Hey, I'll be leaving soon, that's why the short deadline for entries. I'll edit this post to announce the winner tomorrow, so check back here. Good luck, everyone!

This Halloween I'll be taking my son, he's five, out trick or treating and then curling on the couch with all of his "good (read: chocolate) candy with the hubby and watching something cheesy. Something with Christopher Lee perhaps.
Oh, little boy wants to be a knight. A vampire knight. Mommy's so proud!

I will not be celebrating Halloween, because Halloween doesn't get many attention in The Netherlands. But we have Sint Maarten, on November 11th, when children go from door to door, sing and get sweets.

But I would love to win a book! :)

I will more than likely be stuffing my face with candy and watching horror films! Since the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street comes out this week and I haven't watched it yet I may just save it for Halloween.

I have to add that I am oh so very jealous that you get to meet Bruce Campbell! I adored him as Ash!! I'm not sure if you watch it but he's hilarious on Burn Notice. In my opinion he steals the show.

I'm from Argentina, so we actually don't celebrate Hallowen. But, we are teens and we use it as an awesome excuse to hang out and get fun. The little ones usually wear costumes but the celebration don't have the same magnitude here. Personally I like the story of the original holloween, not what people celebrate now. I mean, is like more comercial, another way to sell merchandise. However, is a great opportunity to release new things.
Anyway, I don't know if I wrote everything in the correct way... I would love to win.. hehehe!

I love Halloween and we celebrate all month long. Already me and my spawn have baked cat shaped cookies, spooky cupcakes and made chocolate spiders. Everyday we do a new craft. Next week we are going through a haunted hayride and picking a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch.

Then the week of Halloween we'll go to a reading of Poe stories (my spawn are 3 and 6 and already in love with all things creepy) Boo at the zoo and on the Night itself we will hit the street and Trick or Treat.
then at 10 friends will join us for a circle where we will peer beyond the veil and see what the next year brings as we honor the dead.

I hope you have a truly awesome Hallowed Halloween

Have fun Jeaniene!!! we wil go trick o treating around the lake. They close it off with road block so you can only walk around. The houses around the lake are heavily decorated. They give out candy and some of the houses make their homes to haunted house. One year they had a maze in the front yard. They made you go through it to get candy. Super fun!

In Greece we don't celebrate Halloween -but I spent last year in London with flatmates who were Irish, Scottish AND American (strangely enough, no English in the mix) and we had the most amazing Halloween. Well, it was my first Halloween ever so I guess anything would look amazing to me... But it *was* pretty awesome so I intend to continue the fun now that I'm back home and introduce my 13 and 15 yo cousins to it as well.

My pumpkin-carving technic is not that good (I managed to destroy not one but two pumpkins last year) but we will decorate the front porch with un-carved pumpkins, we'll bake cup-cakes and we'll spend the night in front of the fireplace with stories about Baba-Yanka (in case you don't know her, Baba-Yanka is a Russian witch very popular in Russian fairy-tales. I discovered her existence when I was going through my international folklore phase and kept searching for stories from around the world; both my cousins were just todlers back then and I used to put them to sleep with Baba-Yanka's stories. Their mum even bought a witch doll made of wood and put it on the fireplace, that's how enthralled with her the kids became). Anyway, even though there is no trick-or-treating for us on the horizon nor are horror movies (if the kids watch horror movies they won't sleep for a month), I'm really looking forward to it. Story-telling, a fireplace and cup-cakes, what more to ask for! :D

In Hungary we don't have the tradition of trick or treating at Halloween; and only the younger generation accepts it and celebrates it occasionally. On Halloween I make apples with sugar coating and invite my best friends over to watch the funniest "horror" movies and we have fun.

I grew up in Colorado and I remember Columbine. It was real and I agree it's not something that should be swept under the rug. My step daughter recently moved in with us and she loves books like I do. I censor only books that I know have explicit sex scenes. Her best friend isn't even allowed to read Twilight because of it's sexual content. The poor girl is forced to sneak books home and hide them under her bed.

For Halloween we'll be avoiding the Trick-or-treaters. I know, I know, but the kiddos in our neighborhood don't understand that when the porch light is out we're out of candy. So we take the puppies and the family to do something fun. Usually a festival or drive in. I spent last Halloween in NOLA. Definitely wish I was there again.

As per usual, I'll be wandering through the neighborhood Halloween block party. It's really fun. I don't think I will dress up this year though.

I'm going out trick or treating with my 3 godchildren. Their grandmother always comes over and makes a really good post trick or treating dinner so I can't wait for that as well :-D

This Halloween I will be taking my little ghostbuster along with my little princess (who I am trying to convince to be a care bear because my gramma made care bear costumes for my sister and I when we were her age) trick or treating and to a couple parties over the "hallo- weekend" as target has dubbed it.

This Halloween I will be dressing up-not sure as what yet- and will be attending a few parties hosted by friends. My favorite part of this time of year is pumpkins so I usually plan more about what I'm going to carve my pumpkin into than the costume but I'll have to think of an idea soon! Happy Halloween everybody!!

The hubs and I will take our 3 year old around the neighborhood. Some of our neighbors set up pretty awesome haunted houses so it's a fun evening, and this is the first year our boy picked his own costume.

After taking the little man trick-or-treating, I'm dressing as Blind Mag from Repo! The Genetic Opera and going to a party!! Yes, I'm almost thirty, and I still celebrate Halloween. : ) I'm a big kid.

Halloween, quite possibly my favorite holiday. Who doesn't love all the trappings that comes with it? Spider webbing, cute ornamental gravestones to decorate the front yard and fake blood oozing down my door's window pane with Freddy Krueger laughing jolly homicidal bliss on the television. So needless to say I love decorating my house and scaring the jeepers out of all the little ones that come to my door, squaling in mock terror...music to my ears! LOL So that's what I'll be doing, handing out candy! (And a few scares!)

I don't have any solid plans yet but I'm really hoping my bf and I can manage to get ourselves to D.C. for Colbert's rally to keep fear alive! Perfect for Halloween, lol
Otherwise, we'll probably just watch scary movies :o

I love Halloween! Best holiday of the year! So first and foremost, on Halloween I will be celebrating 12 years married to the most wonderful man in the world! Then we will be taking our kids, son almost 7 who will be Batman and daughter 3 who will be a vampire princess (so proud she wanted to do that). Hopefully sometime before that me and the kids will make sugar cookies with the new cookie cutters I got with a tombstone and haunted house. They want to do them for their classmates. I don't want this month to end! Oh, almost forgot will be attending a live performance of Dracula!

Sorry if I did this twice, but I don't think my first comment posted.

I always make my husband decorate a haunted gingerbread house with me. Halloween isn't celebrated in Dubai and we have a Sunday-Thursday work week, so I'm organizing trick-or-treating for my coworkers and their families on the 28th.

Same thing we do every Halloween, Pinky... try to take over the world. Okay, not really. Our oldest friends have a huge costume party every year with different themes. Last year, the theme was "Guilty Pleasures" so hubby and I dressed up like Dog and Beth the Bounty Hunters. This year it's "retro" and... we have no idea. I'm thinking maybe sperm and egg. How much more "retro" can you get? :P

It kinda is a sad thing that I can't spend my Halloween this year as I love to, which means watching horror and going to the Halloween carnival.
But the reason is a good one, I'll be made preases (chairman, well chairwoman in this case:) ) of my student-horsebackriding association that evening! I hope to it with a set of vampire teeth in though :D

Answering the door as the Grim Reaper, I will try not to frighten "the ghouls". Time... I have none. Then off to play with "the Older Ghouls!"

I ordered the fangs for my costume last week... I'll be a vampire, which isn't too original, BUT I'll also be dancing in the Thriller parade downtown!

I normally go to the Dracula's Ball in Philadelphia with the girls for a night away from reality but this year the hubby and I will be in Toronto for a hockey game over Halloween weekend.

Hopefully, if my plans work out, I'll be in NOLA for Halloween. Much is dependent on funds. As usual.

If I don't make it to NOLA, then I will resort to my Halloween tradition: watch Buffy and pass out candy.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I do something every weekend in October, usually going to Haunted Attractions. But on Halloween I will probably go to a friend's house and help with their Halloween event and scare some people! Okay, maybe just give out candy.

I'm bummed to be missing you at ComicCon.

Hi Jeaniene,

I will be leaving on the 26th to arrive in New Orleans and attend the UndeadCon and the Vampire Memnoch Ball also. This has been a tradition for me for awhile now.

What better place to be on All Hallows Eve. I will be doing the Vampire tour as well as the Haunted Houses and Cemetaries tour. Who knows maybe we will meet on the tours or have Cafe Ali's and Beignets together. Happy Halloween everyone and remember be careful out there, you never know what force you may run into.

We live on a road with only 10 houses so if I'm lucky I'll get one little kiddie come my way. But I will still be making mummy dogs and bloody fingers for dinner :).

We, which is me, my 12 yrd old son, and my 9 yrd old son, will be going to thier Nana's huge Halloween party the weekend before Halloween. Very cool party - haunted wagon ride, lots of food, lots of candy, lots of people. On Halloween my boys are dressing up like Angus Young and Mick from Slipknot (have you seen those guys???) We love, love, love Halloween!

My husband and I are going to dress up as Vam-Pirate's (vampire pirats) and spend Halloween at Renaissance Festival. They have a costume contest and scavenger hunt that are always awesome! Halloween for adults at its best.

My plans for halloween are that I get my 4 kids dressed in costumes for halloween. My oldest will go out by herself, but I will take the next 3 around trick or treating -- and of course waiting for trick or treaters to come to my house.

Great guest post, Jeaniene! My aunt and uncle hold a fancy dress party every halloween, so I'll be going to that as always! Not sure what I'll be this year, but I still have some time!

I will be celebrating Halloween with my family in Disney World in Orlando, Florida....We purchased tickets to the after hours festivities that they have...I can't wait to be a vampire at the happiest place on Earth!

Oh, Halloween use to be so much fun.... Dressing up, trick or treating...But now...
it is put a bowl of candy outside the front door with a note that say please take one or two... Don't ever go to the door anymore... The dogs don't like the knocking and door bell ringing... What a sad little halloween life I have.... :(

But winning a book would make it all better... I am 100% positve about that.... ;)

I'm definitely planning on eating a lot of chocolate!

Thanks for the chance to win one of your books! I love them!
