Untitled # 10?

Congratulations to Sue B! (katsrus@gmail.com) You are the winner! Please contact me at kerry@kerrelynsparks.com so I can get your address.
Many thanks to everyone for the wonderful title suggestions and comments! I have good news for you all-- I made my deadline and Connor's book is finished!!!

Greetings, Undergrounders!
My name is Kerrelyn Sparks, and I'm on the verge of full-fledged panic!
It's that lovely time when authors go cross-eyed and rip all their hair out. It's called deadline hell, or "just shoot me now because my book is due in a week!"
Add Image
Okay, so I'm exaggerating. My hair is only half ripped out. Part of it happened when I discovered the book I'm still writing is already on sale at Amazon. Couldn't they wait till it was finished? And couldn't they wait until it had a title? It's currently listed as Untitled # 10. Great. That will really impress people with how creative I am. They will flock to buy that book. I'm expecting a call from Hollywood any minute. OUCH! There goes more hair!Add Image

So why are titles so darned hard? I can write a book with a hundred thousand words, but a title of five words still eludes me? Oh, for the good old days when titles seemed easy! The titles for my first two books, How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire and Vamps and the City, popped into my head so easily. That was back when I had a full head of hair.

The problems began with the third book. I titled it Vampires in Kilts, and then To Kill a Mocking Vampire. Neither one would do. Eventually, we ended up with Be Still My Vampire Heart. And that was the last title that I managed to come up with. The Undead Next Door was my editor's brilliant idea. She knew what she was doing because it was the first book in the series to hit the New York Times list.Add ImageAdd ImageAdd Image

The fifth book was about Ian MacPhie, that sexy young Scottish vampire. I was going to name it Hot Vamp in the Summertime, when my editor called during a cover meeting and said the sales department had come up with the perfect title and would I please use it? It was All I Want for Christmas is a Vampire. And that is how it goes now. Everybody wants to help with the title. The last book, The Vampire and the Virgin, was named by the head of the art department. The upcoming book, Eat Prey Love, is another amazing idea from my editor.Add ImageAdd Image

So do you want a piece of the action, too? What would you like to name Untitled # 10? It's Connor's book. Another hot and sexy Scottish vampire. Leave an idea or a comment or a coupon for Rogaine and you'll have a chance to win three books from the Love at Stake series: Secret Life of a Vampire, Forbidden Nights with a Vampire, and The Vampire and the Virgin. The contest is open to everyone, and the winner is selected totally at random. (sorta like my titles) Thanks in advance for stopping by, and good luck!

Wow Kerrelyn-what an honor to be able to name Connor's book; he is widely loved in the "Love at Stakedom"! But, if you pick a winner "at random" how will you be able to pick the best name for the book? Connor deserves the best!

Melanie B said...

I absolutely love your books!!!! Skeptical when I first pick one up at my local library, but after reading it, I went to the bookstore and purchased all of them. Maybe it was some vampire mind control that made me pick up the book. I guess I'm not immune to it. LOL Keep writing those wonderful stories please!!!!!

Ooh that is a tough one...Conner....

How about: Melt My Heart or Bittersweet or Wild Veins

I mean Conner is always the man in charge..while Vampire's all around him are finding true love. Roman was first to fall and the rest seemed to follow in suit except for Conner.I do hope you've got his girl picked out. Oh I hope she is fierce but sweet...that's what Conner needs.

I can't wait for your next book! Angus and Emma was the first book I read (and reread multiple times) and was hooked. I've got all my friends hooked too. I fell for Conner in it also and can't wait to hear his story. I was so excited to see you're a fellow Texan(I'm from Galv) and am looking for a close book signing to meet you! Keep up the great work!

I have enjoyed your books when I am not working on books for others. I enjoyed yours because it was just a cleaver idea and I have always loved men in kilts....Title names:

MEN IN KILTS (could not resist)*lol*
VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES
DIEING TO MELT MY(or A) VAMPIRE HEART
I have a list of names I have used for other people but I pull from a list I normally come up easily, just tired tonight...but good luck and thank you for sharing your view into the paranormal realm....PS: My hubby goes out of town often, so therefore I read often during my down time when the kids and work are not driving me to nearly drink, but maybe more sex???????*panting* I know ...such a pervie!!!*lmao* Thank you Ms Sparks....

I'm horrible at coming up with book titles :( Is there a certain theme that you have running throughout your book? Or perhaps a mannerism of Connor's that you could twist into a title?

If we're gonna go with the Scottish vamp theme.. maybe:

Kiss of the Scot

Yeah. I think I'm gonna stop there before I embarrass everyone who reads this comment LOL

Kimberly B. said...

I'm so bad at coming out with punny titles. Here are the few I came up with:
Undead Languages
Undead on My Feet
Blood Red Rose
If there's a vampire hunter in it, you could call it
Claymore or Slay More
Yeah, I got nothing.
Thanks for the great giveaway!

Aw, don't worry! This was a great and funny post, though! :D That whole Amazon thing would definitely be crushing me with pressure if I were in your shoes! Good luck!!!

The only title I can think of is "Vampire Voodoo" LOL - random. :)

I am so addicted to your books. You are an amazing author. Good luck with your next title. (Vamps and "voodoo" Dolls) just an idea.

Nicoletta Campanelli said...

Great article, sometimes it really is more difficult to think of a good title than write a hundred thousand words! I love your series so keep up the great work and good luck with the title. Here are some ideas: Vamp On A Hot Tin Roof or The Vampire Who Came from the Highlands.

Carol L. said...

I loved your post Kerrelyn.
Book titles can be tricky. But all I can come up with is:
Night Walker
Kilted Vamp
Vamp Guard
Carol L.
Lucky4750@aol.com

AngelGoneMad said...

With Connor being Scottish, maybe using doric in the title?

'Aye Pecking Vampire?'

Which roughly translates into still pecking (meaning still living or whatever you want it to mean really, there is no hard definition) and then vampire to keep that in the title to go with the rest of the books in the series.

Terri Garey said...

Ah, the hair-pulling stage, topped with the search for the perfect title... you need a ball cap, Kerry, and pull it on tight so you can yank on the bill instead of your poor hair! Some alcohol might help, too! :-D

Since most of your titles seem to be book or movie or tv show related, I guess I'd be looking at classics: Along Came A Spider would become Along Came A Vampire. Arsenic and Old Lace would become Vampires and Old Lace. Another Day, Another Dollar would become Another Day, Another Vampire.

Oo, The Good, The Bad and the Undead! I like that one. :-) Good luck!

Helen Lowe said...

Hey Kerrelyn,

Not sure I can help with the title, but I think you're going to have plenty of help with that anyway. :-) But my editor requested a title change for my first book and although I gnawed several pens into submission during the process (oh, the pressure of a new title when you're so familiar with the working title!) when I finally came up with "Thornspell" it ended being 'just perfect'-and fortunately all those other people on the team agreed. :-)

Jessica @ a GREAT read said...

Oh I hate trying to think of titles. So many of my WIPs are either something really cheesy or it's untitled 1, 2, 3...

The Tessy Tree said...

Good luck with whatever you pick! I'm addicted to your books! Whatever you choose will be fabulous as always! All I can think of at this hour is "a time to kilt". Or "aye time to kilt" lol :)

Hey Kerrelyn!

I absolutely love your books and I find it kind of addictive. Lol its hard choosing a title when you hardly know who the herione is? Or whats she's like 'cause it can't be all about Mr. Hot Conner. Good luck with the title. I'm already excited for the next book. Eek!!!

Texas Book Lover said...

Your books are fantastic!!! I can hardly wait for the next one to come out. And just the mention of Connor's book has me supper excited!!! I know his background story is going to be intense since he is always so against any couples getting together. The only titles I can think of for Connor (considering we don't get a sneak peak at the book) are "Vampire Undoing" or "Wake My Vampire Heart"

Terri said...

I can't wait for Connors book (I still think I should be his love interest....:)) anyway my title idea....
The Darkness Inside.
Good luck with naming it, what ever the title I will devour it!

How about "Scots on the Rocks" =)

KerrelynSparks said...

Thanks for all the help and encouragement! Some great suggestions there! My working title has been In Darkness I Will Dwell, which I really liked since it suits Connor's personality and his original time period. There's a song by John Dowland called In Darkness Let Me Dwell which was the pop hit music of Connor's original time period. Anyway, that title's not going to be used. Too dark, I suppose, since I write romantic comedy.

Pamela Palmer said...

Love the post, Kerrelyn!

My titles are easy. I toss the editorial department half a dozen words and they pick one to pair with UNTAMED. Until then, it's just Feral # whatever. I'm currently writing Feral #6.

Hello Kerrelyn,
I am so sorry to hear about your book troubles. I am a big fan of the "Love At Stake Series."

As for potential titles, I tend to like titles that play on words and Connor has been kind of grumpy so how about...

The Taming of The Vampire/Scot

I would also like to put my vote in for The Good, the Bad, and The Undead. If you don't use that title for Connor's book I think that it would also work well for Phineas's given his tendency towards cliche and shady past.

Good luck title hunting!

Well I wish you good luck with your new book, I'm very ecstatic to see the end result. Personally I am awaiting Carlos's book but I will also be waiting to read Connor's. To take a spin off of one of the others comments CrystalGB had a great idea with Seduced by a Highland Vampire.

But depending on how the story goes perhaps Seducing a Highland Vampire would be better. Like I said depends on who's doing the seducing. Or How to Seduce a Highland Vamp.

I think this is a great idea to generate titles for Connor's book. Good Luck with it.

Loved the post!

I can't wait for Carlos' book! I have been reading this series from the beginning (even though according to my mother 13 is too young to be reading these kinds of books!) and my favorite character has been Connor. I have been waiting for his book ever since I finished How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire. As the series has gone on, more of Connor has been revealed and it has made me love him more! It has also showed that poor Connor has been hurt more than once by love or by his status as a vampire. I think the name should reflect that. But no matter what you choose to name it I'll be waiting impatiently to read it and see how Connor finds his happy ending!

Keep up the AMAZING work!

I'm a huge fan of your books. I have read all of them at least once. I Can't wait for more. Here is what I came up with.

Security of a Vampire heart
Lonely Nights of a Vampire
Secrets behind the Vampire Heart
Secrets of the Vampire Heart
Guardian of the Heart

Good Luck with the title...

Love your books. I have two of the three your giving away. The one I'm missing is "Forbidden Nights with a Vampire."

I just bought "How to marry a Millionaire Vampire" this past week for my Sony Reader. I can't wait to start it.

As for a title or an idea I'm just not that creative, sorry. But I will read it when it comes out.

I *heart* the Love at Stake series! In accordance with the prophecies, here are my suggestions:

To Vamp or Not to Vamp?
Highland Vampire
No Stakes, No Problems
Vamp of the Loch
Vamp of the Glen
Have Vamp, Will Travel

Kind of weak, I guess, but I'm running low on sleep (thanks, parenthood...lol). Good luck!

Yeesh! There are so many good ones here that I barely feel like sending one myself! It's hard to think of a title when one-half of the romance's description is absent, meaning Connor's lady love. Well, here goes. Knowing that Connor is always a serious chap, I submit this: "The Vampire Who Smiled at Me". Yes, I know-you all are thunderstruck! Thanks for the opportunity Kerrelyn!

This is fun - I love titles - I am going to get in on the action. :)

How about:

A Highland Vampire
Real Vampires where Kilts

No - well - it was fun :)

I know Connor's book will be the best. He is my 2nd favorite character of the series--second only to Angus. I secretly dream of marrying my own Angus one day--a non vampire version, of course. Hope you keep on writing forever. I've turned on several teacher friends to your books. You are awesome.

Love this post! Gosh - I am not being creative.. *thinks* What about "Untitled #10"? Just kidding! I can't believe they would post it like that - but it does get the buzz out there. :D

What about ---

"Grab the garlic, it's a Vampire!

"Vampires Love Their Red Pudding" (or "Blood Pudding")

"Vampires Wouldn't be Caught Dead Playing a Bagpipe"

I'm not in a creative mood.) I'll come back if I think of something better! I know the second I post this, it'll pop into my head.

Connor has been one of my favorites ever since he was called "an old gassbag" in my personal Kerrilyn Spraks' book All I Want For Christmas is a Vampire. I can't wait to read Untitled #10:).
I can't come up with any titles on my own so my vote is for the previously suggested "Mending a Vampire Heart" or "Tall, Dark and Vampire."
Good luck with the Rogaine Kerrilyn:).

Hello! I absolutely can't wait for Connor's book! :)
I told my friends about your title search and together we came up with:
When the Wind Blows ;)
The Hilt under his Kilt ;)
The Vampires Guarded Heart
The Highlanders Guarded Heart
To Tame a Highlander
To Tame a Wild Scot
To Heal a Wounded Vamp
To Light the Darkness Within

I think that's it! LOL :)
Good Luck with the Book!

Oh, I love this series! I got my best friend reading them too. We can't wait for Connor's story. We have been saying he needs one of his own for a while now. Anyway, for a title I kind of like "Waking My Undead Heart" I don't know. That's the best I can do. Good luck and I can't wait to read the Carlos' book!

I thought of somemore titles while watching Eclipse at the theater today! I know, very weird place to be thinking of book titles but I'm lucky breathing is an involuntary function or I'd get distracted and not do that! Anyway...Here are my ideas!:

From Scotland with Love
From the Highlands with Love

i love your books. they are just great. i was thinking. heal this vampire heart, heart body and blood, flirting with the undead, vamp with the scottish love. they probably are not very good but it gives you some more choices. no-luv@live.com

Aww you poor thing. Be gentle to your hair. It's not its fault :) I imagine it can get tough coming up with creative titles that have to fit in a particular way. How about 'Quiet Days with a Vampire'? Sorry not real catchy. You have my sympathy. Just remember- You are fabulous. All of us thing so :)

Anonymous said...

How about 'Requiem for a Vampire'.. No not real good I know. But that's why I'm not a writer. LOL. You guys should be able to pay people for creative titles. It'd be brilliant. Good luck on your title.

1. blood on the rocks
2. pain in the neck
3. pleased to eat you
4. a vampire cannot change his fangs
5. a garlic clove a day keeps the vampires away (probably too long but I had a bad case of the giggles after I thought of that one.)
6. beauty is only fang deep
7. Fangs don't make the man
8. it's raining vampires

All of these probably suck but I'm starting to have way too much fun with this! :-p
