NIGHTSPELL giveaway!

The winner of the Nightspell giveaway is Ilona, whose favorite ghost book is The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde. Congratulations, and thank you everyone else for entering!

Almost exactly a month ago, my second book, Nightspell, was released. It’s a stand-alone companion novel to my first book, Mistwood, with one cross-over character. Since the book has now been out for a month, I can even tell you who that cross-over character is: Clarisse. Rokan’s manipulative, scheming sister is back… and this time she’s in a kingdom where the dead and living co-exist uneasily, and where the arrival of a determined barbarian princess is about to change everything.

You can read the first three chapters of Nightspell at the HarperCollins website. Or, if you don’t feel like clicking, here’s the very beginning:

Darri didn’t see the ghost until he was upon her, a solid weight that dropped from the branches above and threw her sideways off the saddle. Because he was solid, she didn’t realize at first that he was dead. She hit the ground with a thud and rolled to her feet, pulling her dagger from her boot. By the time she was standing, she had already thrown it.

The dagger plunged into the man’s chest with a thunk, and he laughed at her. He was a large, ruddy man wearing a fine set of riding clothes and a short cape. As he laughed, his body slowly faded, so that even in the torchlight Darri could see the trees through him. Her dagger dropped straight down through his body and disappeared into the dark mass of ferns that covered the forest floor.

And of course, there’s a giveaway: I’m giving away a personalized signed copy of Nightspell. For a chance to win, post a comment on the thread and mention a ghost book you really enjoyed – whether from your childhood or more recently.

Contest ends on Sunday, July 10, at midnight. I will randomly select one winner and post their name at the top of this post – and if you leave an email address in your comment, I’ll notify you by email as well. Open internationally.

Mine would be Tom's Midnight Garden - where the ghost was an unusual ghost. Or it might have to be Moondial! Oh too many too choose from.

Thanks for a great competition.

One ghost story that really stuck with me since I read it a couple months ago was 'Past Midnight' by Mara Purnhagen. AND I literally started reading it around midnight. I was... a LITTLE scared, I'll admit. Or maybe A LOT. lol.

But there's so many books that I've read and Loved that have ghosts, that it's hard to choose just one, ya know?

Thanks for the giveaway, Leah! <3

Ooh, giveaways!

As a kid, I really liked Christopher Pike's *Remember Me,* wherein the main character is a ghost trying to solve her own murder.

I really liked Shade & Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready. They're kind of a different take on the traditional ghost story.

I just finished Give up the Ghost a few weeks ago. It was fun & instead of the teen girl hating her powers, she actually relied on them so much that she stopped interacting with living people. I thought that was very different from most of the ghost books I've read!

Thanks for the giveaway!

Mine would be Awake and Dreaming by Kit Pearson, where the ghost is an author who manages to somehow grant a young girls deepest wish - but only for a short time.

Thank you for the giveaway!

A ghost book i really enjoyed would have to be Born at Midnight by CC Hunter. It's about group of 'misfits' who are sent to a 'reform camp' because they have special powers. There's one girl who can see dead people and she's haunted by this one ghost who doesn't leave her alone. There's a love triangle for those who like that. It's an amazing book!

Hmm, ghost books. I really haven't read a whole lot of books involving ghosts. I do remember taking a field trip to a haunted plantation in Southern Louisiana when I was a kid though. It was really creepy. Oh and I recently read BAD GIRLS DON'T DIE, and I did really like that one. ;o)

I love the book 'Ghosts' by Adrian Plass. It's a completely engaging read, and although the ghosts never come out in the open in the story, I like to think that they really were there all along. :)

My favorite ghost story was also Remember Me by Christopher Pike. I first read it while I was in highscool and I loved it so much I had to buy the newest publication. I previously owned the 3 book set. I like how the story is now in one volume. This is a classic teen novel and I'm glad it has stood the test of time.

I was a scaredy cat as a kid that I didn't read a lot of ghost stories...Goosebumps terrified me. I do remember reading a collection of Scary Stories that had a lot of ghost stories, but I think I repressed those from my memory. Except for the one about a girl names Emily who always wore a scarf around her neck. When she was old and died, they took the scarf off and her head fell off!

My favorite ghost story is Claudia Grey's Afterlife. Its not exactly a ghost story but the main character dies and becomes a wraith. I love this book because it shows her struggles in life after dying and fearing that her parents would hate her after becoming the one thing that her parents feared the most. Her parents are horrified about what happened to their daughter but made sure she knew that they still loved her regardless of what she became.

This book is a beautiful story and it helped me safe my fears of rejection and just overall gave me strength when I needed it the most.
