Afterlife and the Newbie Author

CONTEST IS CLOSED!

Hi, everyone! I decided to choose two winners for this post, so here are the winners: The WINNER of a signed copy of AFTERLIFE and a small jar of Liquid Light is Nymfaux. The WINNER of a signed copy of AFTERLIFE IS Melissa, who posted on October 15, 2010 2:41 PM. CONGRATULATIONS! There are two ways you can get me your contact info. One: You can DM me your e-mail and mailing address on Twitter. Or you can send me your e-mail and mailing address here: merrie [dot] destefano [at] yahoo [dot] com. Thanks to everyone who commented! You all rock!

I’ve had a lot fun in the past several weeks, ever since my debut novel, Afterlife: The Resurrection Chronicles, released on September 28. I got to write a number of guest posts and did several online interviews. If you haven’t seen any of them, here are some links: Dark Fairie Tales, Romance University, Night Owl Paranormal, Bitten by Books, Nocturne Romance Reads, Sci Fi Guy, and Bookgasm. Along the way, I had some great chats with readers about the differences between One-Timers and Nine-Timers [if you had the opportunity to resurrect, rather than die, would you?], and the sous-terrain société [would you stay in contact with your current family members or build a new family in your new life?].

There have been a number of great reviews by folks like SFRevu, Rex Robot Reviews, and Night Owl Reviews.

I really want to thank each and every blogger who invited me to participate. You bloggers rock!

On top of that, getting to chat with readers of Afterlife has been fantastic. I’ve gotten to know of many of them through my Facebook page and on Twitter. Another thing that's really exciting is the fact that I’ll get to meet some potential readers face-to-face in the next couple weeks. [SQUEEE!] I have two events coming up that I’m totally jazzed about.

First, I have a book-signing at Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore in San Diego on Sunday, Oct. 17, from 2-3 p.m. Joining me and signing his own new release, Kill The Dead, is Richard Kadrey. If you haven’t checked out his Sandman Slim, the first in this series, then you should. Soon. You don’t want to left behind. His stories are awesome! So I hope you get a chance to stop by and say hi this Sunday.

Second, I’ll be doing a Meet The Author tea at Paris in a Cup on Oct. 30. Located in Orange, California, this charming tea salon/boutique with a Parisian theme will be decked out for Mardi Gras and all attendees are invited to come in costume. In between listening to jazz and dining on scrumptious food, I’ll do a reading from Afterlife and then do a Q & A session. I hope some of you will be able to attend. I’d love to meet you!

Also, I’ve been working a reader’s guide and hope to have that finished soon. It will be available as a free download on my website and blog once it’s done. So those of who might want to choose Afterlife for your book club, please stop by my site in about a week for a free reader’s guide.

And, believe it or not, I've already finished my second novel, titled, Feast: Harvest of Dreams. It’s scheduled to release on June 28, 2011 and it’s already available for preorder on Amazon here. I wish I could show you the cover—it’s beyond awesome. I can’t tell you too much about this book yet, but here’s a very brief summary: For the past 100 years, a small mountain village in Southern California has been struggling under a mysterious curse. And every year, on Halloween, strange and dangerous creatures come to feed on the humans.

So, today, I’m combining two things as one giveaway. Besides a signed copy of Afterlife: The Resurrection Chronicles, I’m also giving away a small jar of Liquid Light. Of course, this Liquid Light isn’t explosive or dangerous like it is in the book, but you can still roll it between your fingers and throw it across the room. In other words, you can pretend you’re a Babysitter.

CONTEST RULES:

So here’s my question for you: What's the best book you've read recently? I finally have a little bit of free time and I can't wait to read some new books! So tell me what you've read that you loved and maybe why you liked it.

And I’ll be giving away a small of Liquid Light and a signed copy of Afterlife to one of the people who make a comment. To enter to win, please post a comment below. You can earn points by:

Wow, I already follow you on facebook, and I just did the rest, so is that, like, 10 entries? I'm not a math wizard, for sure. Plus, it's Friday, my brain is already into the weekend *smile*

AFterlife is looking pretty interesting. Love the cover. I just added it to my TBR pile.

Happy Friday!

Hi, sweetie! I hope you're feeling better. =) I love all the posts and pictures and videos of Super Kitteh. He's beyond adorable.

So glad you're reading Sandman Slim! Yes, this is the only bookstore signing I have set up and I'm astonished that Richard Kadrey is going to be there. He's like a superstar.

Thanks so much for stopping by! *hugs*

Hi. Well, I just finished Rachel Vincent's Alpha, the last book in her Shifter series, and it was great. Also right now reding The Ninja by Eric Lustabader, which is not new but still great, especially if you're into martial arts and Japan :)
I think I have about 5 points. lol

You must try the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep! Her recent novel Venom was just released and it is great...each book gets better and better.

Also Ilona Andrew's Magic series, must say it is one of the best series i have ever read.

Hi Merrie!
Well, of course I want to say Afterlife - but you've already read that one...
Along with fantasy/scifi I also enjoy crime procedurals. The authors Preston and Child dance the line between them both. Their latest, "Fever Dream" was very satisfying. I get almost giddy whenever they bring out something new.
No twitter account and my blog is under construction - but I've done the rest! (Which gives me a lousy 5 points.)
But I have a question. If I remember my HS French correctly Sous-terraine society means "underground society" right? Since they've never been buried, wouldn't sur-terraine be more appropriate? (Not that I'd have you change it, just wondering why...)

I was floored by how good Meljean Brook's THE IRON DUKE was. It's a steampunk romance. If you like your heroes very alpha, you'll swoon for Rhys. And our heroine Mina does more saving than he does. Totally a great read.

Hey Merrie! I could use some liquid light to clean my 9 year old's room .

This week I read Legacy of Ghosts by Joleene Naylor. This is the second book (Shades of Gray is the first). Dark vampire romance/action. Her lead vamp Jorick is smoldering. Naylor is an indie writer and her books are available for e-readers for $2. So glad I stumbled upon them! :)

I just started His Darkest Embrace today;)

I love all your book suggestions! Can't wait to read some of these.

Van,
Hi! How are you? You should get HOW TO DRAW VAMPIRES tomorrow. =)

Jane, Hmmm. I don't remember my HS French. I asked the French teacher at my husband's school to help me come up with phrases I could use in the book, and sous-terrain société was her suggestion. It's supposed to mean underground society, like you said, but honestly I don't know the difference in the two terms. =(

Merrie Destefano said...

Hi, Yelena and VampireBookClub,
Love your suggestions too!

Barbara,
Thanks for the congrats! I hope you like the book. =)

Kelly,
Thanks for all the hard work! I'm looking forward to checking out the books you mentioned!

Cherry,
I have that book by Rob Thurman too!

Anonymous,
Well, thank you! *hugs*

Sharon,
Hi! Wow, I should use that Liquid Light to clean my own house, now that you mention it. Oooh, great book ideas!

Cath,
I just bought Hush, Hush. It's on my TBR pile. Yay! I have two that have been recommended.

Jessica,
Those sound great too! My reading list is growing, just what I wanted. =)

Patricia,
I've been wanting to check out the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod. I like that you read two diff. book genres. Cool!

Sullivan,
I'm getting excited now! Those all sound awesome.

Melissa,
Thanks for coming up with a new one! I'll be checking out Tyger Tyger by Kersten Hamilton.

Lea,
I've heard so many great things about Nalini Singh. Maybe I should start with that book!

Karyn,
Thanks for the suggestion. Isn't it so cool when you are still reading a book and so in love with it? I really enjoy that, although I never get anything else done. =)

Well, you all told me the best book you've read recently, so I thought I would tell my latest fave. I just finished reading Let Me In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. It was pretty dark and had some parts that made me a bit squeamish, but it was the best vampire book I've read in a long time. It felt very "Nosferatu" or "Dracula" in nature. It's the one the current movie is based on and it was an international bestseller. If you decide to read it, just remember it is Dark with a capital D. =)

Stephanie M said...

The best books I have read recently are Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews and Eat, Prey, Love by Kerrelyn Sparks. Ilona Andrews is one of my favorite authors and I love that William was able to get his own story after not getting the girl in On the Edge. Eat, Prey, Love was great because I could not put it down. There is not one part of the story I like best because the whole thing is amazing.

Thanks for the giveaway.

Great Giveaway! I would love to win this, thanks for the opportunity!

The best books I've read recently were the Downside series by Stacia Kane, starting with Unholy Ghosts. I loved so many things about them, mainly the flawed heroine, the incredibly interesting and dark world, and the "downspeak" the slang that the Downsiders use.

I was just rereading Destined for an Early Grave by Jeanien Frost and I loved it even more the second (okay fourth) time. But since you've probably already read her books I'll suggest Karen Marie Moning's Fever series, Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thomas series, and everything by Christine Feehan. Not too many xDD

I already posted--but I was so excited about Afterlife, that I forgot to mention what I've been reading recently...

First off...Sophie Jordan's Firelight is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVED it!!!!

Oh and Immortal Beloved by Cate Tiernan--frackin' FANTASTIC!!!

Also, I'm coming off a little bit of a sugar rush, from Tera Lynn Childs' Eye Candy--It's one of her unpublished novels--She puts a chapter on her website every week (for free) and it is SOOOOO DELICIOUS!!!!

And I'm also in the middle of reading Sara Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series--which has completely sucked me in...

Happy reading!!!

my point total was 10 out of 10--I can't wait for Afterlife!!!
