Book Addicts Anonymous

Congratulations to Johanna, who won the signed copy of The Undead Next Door! Thank you all for the very interesting comments! Please come back next month (the 25th of each month) for another chance at winning a signed book.

I'm going to make this short since I have to admit to being a bit frazzled. I have contest entries to judge, final page proofs to read, the clock running on completing my next full-length book, two interviews and a blog to write, and a speech to polish up that I'm giving next weekend at the Heart of Dixie Readers' Luncheon in Huntsville, Alabama (hope to see some of you there!) And as hectic as all that sounds, it's fairly normal for writers. We tend to live with an ever-constant sensation of impending doom. Why? Good question. Maybe we thrive on drama and conflict. Maybe I'm guilty of poor time management or an inability to tell people 'no.' Or maybe I'm hoping that if I stay really busy no one will realize I have no idea what I'm doing. Whatever the reasons, the underlying cause is basically this: I love books.

I love to read, and that love led me to writing. I love the whole business of books so much that I get swamped. One time I was so engrossed in writing that I got a phone call from the elementary school. School had let out twenty minutes earlier, and I'd forgotten to pick up my daughter! How embarrassing! Luckily, my daughter never held it against me. She understood, because she already loved books, too. Fellow readers understand the addiction... and the consequences. Supper gets burned. You go to work after a measly two hours of sleep.

What crazy thing has happened to you because you couldn't put down a book? Leave a comment and a lucky winner will receive a signed copy of The Undead Next Door. And many thanks to all of you for your support! Vampire Mine has survived three weeks on the bestseller lists!

I was reading during a lull in work and got reported. I got called in to the office! One is suppose to stare at the walls during a lull and can't read. I got a memo.

I've done the "forget to pick up the child" thing too . When I got there late my daughter glared at me and said "you were reading, weren't you!" LOL, they know me so well.

I've been late to church, work, and even the dr's office (which is just up the street from the house) because I've gotten caught up in a good book...fortunately everyone has been every understanding...lol

Thanks for the contest!

For me, mostly homework (back in highschool) never got done (until the class period before). Now, in college, reading keeps me from studying for my exams!! Eeep!

I am a complete book addict. Things have gotten so bad that when I start reading a series once I finish the first book I have to read the next and continue this process. One time I read three books in a row while missing all of my meals, college classes, and sleep for an entire 24 hours. Let's just say I was lucky I didn't have class the next day

Embarrassingly, my son knows that if mommy is reading and he wants my attention he needs to get between me and the book to get my attention.

Oh, hooo, lemme see..

Because I can't put down book I'd read I'm always postponed to working for my thesis, and I'm graduated a years later :P.. When I supposed to analyze data, I choose to read book instead. For me, one day not read anything like I'm get lost in desert :P

One crazy thing, I always re-read the same book again and again (in this case, one is Archangel's Kiss by Nalini Singh, and Forbidden Night with yours truly, Kerrelyn!:D) while my TBR get higher and higher :)

Btw, congrats for Vampire Mine, my copy not arrived yet, I hope I got it in this week, can't wait to read about Connor ^_^

Once I was reading uptil 3am and then fell asleep at church that morning. My mother wasn't very thrilled. She asked me why couldn't I read my textbooks with such enthusiasm? If my college included Paranormal romance fiction to their syllabus I would ace that class! Lol

My story isn't a very funny one....
My sister, who was about 12 at the time and I was 14, almost choked on an orange because I was reading and not paying attention to her.
I read like my grandmother reads....the house could burn down around us and we wouldn't notice.
It's been 20 years since that happened and she and I still talk about the "incident."
I do, however, try to be more aware of what's going on around me now.

Its sometimes so bad for me that my family literally schedules time with me. My husband and youngest do not share my love for reading so they do not understand why I always have my head in a book. My youngest even told me once (he is 11) that I was "missing" his life. Talk about guilt trip.

I have always been an avid reader. As a kid, I had to hide under the covers with a flashlight to read. While camping, I was banned to sleep in the car because I'd be up half the night reading. Now, as an adult, I read whenever the heck I want to! LOL. I do forfeit sleep if I'm in the middle of a great story.

I totally forgot I had potatoes boiling on the stove for mashed potatoes. It didn't set off the smoke alarm, but the non-stick pan was so toasted that the coating flaked off even after soaking the ruined potatoes overnight. The DH won't let me forget that one anytime soon. IIRC, I was reading "Eat Prey Love" at the time.

Tamara Hoffa said...

I guess I'm a fairly organized person, never burned a meal or missed picking up a child. I only forfeit sleep. My daughter says I am not human, because I will read til 1,2,3,In the morning and get up and go to work the next day. Always have, even in high school I would read until the wee hours. Now I try not to start a book unless I know Ihave time to finish, because I CAN'T put them down, I have to know the end and I NEVER skip to the end I have to read it thru.

Unknown said...

I have all the books in the series and I managed to get a couple of coworkers to start the series and they love it as much as I do. My favorite book in the series is "All I want for Christmas is a Vampire" ian was my favorite character from the start. Can't wait for your next book.

June M. said...

I will willingly give up sleep to read. I carry a little booklight with me, so that I can read anytime, anywhere. My 17 year old niece calls it my "nerd" light. As I am the only one in my family who is an avid book reader, no one understands me.

BTW, when EAT, LOVE, PREY came out, I read it twice within 24 hours, just because I loved it so much! Again, my family did not understand!

I stayed up all night reading and thought I could go to work with only a couple of hours sleep. Wrong, I did not wake up and was two hours late for work. I lied and told my boss my alarm did not go off. Lucky for me she did not mind, much! LOL! Thanks for sharing with us today!

This is my favorite book! Love Jean-Luc! *Swoon*

Oh boy...my husband hates my reading addiction. I've messed all kinds of things up because I can not quit reading. The worst ...so embarissing...was one time I had a book open on my counter and I was reading as I was doing dinner. It was at that last few chapters and I could not wait until night to read it. So I read it as I cooked. My husband said I had serious issues...lol
I'd love to have a copy of your book for my book shelf. Thanks for the chance to win it.

Burning supper ,what about skipping it all together, the only time I got out of my chair was for a restroom break and than looking at the clock to find out it 's 7a.m. and you have an hours drive to get to work so no sleep or food until lunch time

I went to the park to read while I was on lunch. I got so wrapped up in my book that one of my coworkers went searching for me because it was *way* past my allocated hour for lunch! Oops! Aside from that, I can certainly relate to almost everybody elses stories already listed: all-nighters, been late too many times to count, burnt dinner, etc, etc.

I had a book once that was very, very interesting and I couldn't put it down. Thankfully, it was very G-rated for the following reason: I just couldn't put it down and my daughter wanted me to read to her. So......yes, I read it to her. I used it as a reading lesson too: I had her pick out words on every page that she knew. Every page we upped the number she had to find. Ended up being one chapter we shared, but it is still a funny memory. :)

I too was once late to pick up my daughter, due that I went to the library because I was out of books to read. Sometimes I look just a little to long.

so i have two stories..
the first i was reading one of the love at stake books (please forgive, im having a brain fart and can't remember the name of the title to save my life) but anyways i have a daycare and it was one of those moments where there wasn't any chaos. so i took advantage of the moment and tried to sneak in a few pages. well i was at the part where they were transporting all over the place in one of the many attempts to get casmir and as the tempo of the book picked up so did the atmosphere of my daycare. and it was one of those "i just want to finish the page..." feelings as the kids kept coming with "he hit me!", "she took my toy", " i have to pee!". all the while in the book there was fighting, someone lost a limb.. chaos. no lie i told the kids to freeze dance and they did and i got to finish the page lol. when i was done i told them to let the chaos commence and they thought i was nuts but it was funny.
my other story is my ex and his friends wanted to go to some sci-fi flick i just wasn't into so i opted to go to barnes and noble to chill while they went. i had just become a fan of the supernatural underground site and i wanted to try jeanine frost's books. i found the one with spade and its separate from the cat and bones series. well i went got my coffee and found a comfy chair and started to read. i lost track of time and it was almost time to close and i look up and my ex was there. he told me that he had been there for about a half hr and didnt have it in him to let me know he was there bc i was in my world lol. the sadder part was i was half way through the book.

I didn't burn dinner but actually forgot to make dinner needless to say the family wasn't too happy about having to eat a bowl of cereal I was so into the book, didn't realize it was hours later even though I told myself i was only going to read a little before making dinner. i could get sucked into another world and never return and be truly happy especially if that world involves those hunky vampires and shape shifters from the Love at Stakes.

For the last three Harry Potter novels, I did not put them down until I was finished. I brought them everywhere. My mom was getting really pissed off because would read them at the dinner table, in the car (only for short rides, or I'd get car sick)... I even walked around the house with my nose in these books because I could not put them down. The best part was when we went to Steak N Shake because there was a boy around my age at the next table doing the exact same thing. I was like "HA! It's not just me!"

I've apparently held entire conversations with people while reading that I don't remember afterwards. The way you know I'm actually listening is if I put the book down. If someone starts talking to me and I don't put the book down, I'll nod and murmur in agreement/disagreement so that the person thinks I'm paying attention. I've gotten yelled at for that one.

When I was in college, I'd bring books with me to read before class started because I was always early (especially when I had classes in the same building and didn't have to walk across campus). There were a couple times that I got so wrapped up in a chapter that I wouldn't put the book down until I finished, even if the professor had already started the lecture.

I read Undead Next Door last year for the first time. I'll read literally anywhere, but most of the time it is in the bath. One afternoon, while I was reading this book in the bath, my phone rang. I was wrapped up in this book so much I couldnt even take my eyes off the page. I reached for my phone and missed grabbing a lit candle it was next to. Thankfully I didnt burn my ear too badly because I was wet from the steam, BUT I did have this really ugly red stripe on that side of my face for awhile.
Funny thing is that even after I burned myself I kept reading haha I couldnt put it down. Time and everything completely stops for me when I read this series. Im worse than an alcoholic XD

I am a complete book addict! I love to read because you can connect to the characters. Each story is so unique.I have lost so much sleep from staying up late just to finish a book are wanting to know what happens next. You'll always find a book in my purse. :) My kids can tell when I come home with a new book. I remember one time my 5yr old son and I were at a store and I told him he couldn't have a toy he crossed his arms and said fine then no more books for you. That was a priceless moment

I read about 3-4 hours a day, somedays a lot more than that. I always have a book or my ipad with me at the doctor's office, the hair dressers, the nail salon etc.
I confess, this is bad, but I've read while stopped at a stop light, and then getting honked because I didn't realize that the light had changed. Your series is one of my favorite reading, and I've hooked several of my friends and my daughter-in-law on it. Keep up the GREAT work and keep them coming!

I love your books! I have stayed up all night reading and have been late for many things because I couldn't put the book down. The latest thing happened in the middle of the night. I had to make a potty stop, put the book on the sink without turning on the lights and when I did turn on the light the book had slid into the sink that the 7 year old had filled full of water growing snakes. What made it worse, the book was a library book.

So ~ I was dieing to finish a story. So I put my Kindle in my purse and brought it into the ladies room with me so I could sneak a peak under the guise of a "potty break". I didn't have to go but I wanted to read my book. I was in the stall reading my Kindle and started to LAUGH really hard at this one part and the person in the stall next to me said "well I guess everything is working out well in there." - It was my boss.

I always say its an obsession, an book obsession. I do the same things like reading till 2am and going to work on lil' sleep because I just needed to find out what happened next. I felt like deje'vu with the school scenario. I forgot to wake my husband up to pick up my boys from school. For some reason, I thought he was already on his way, to wrapped up in the plot it seems. I think I need a support group. Is there such a thing?

The next thing I knew I was looking at the clock because I was irratated that the cats where howling and just wouldn't stop ... it was 9pm and they were tired of waiting for their supper which is supposed to be around 6:30 pm. Woops!

I would have to say that getting grounded from books is my craziest experience. Back in High School when I would neglect my homework or forget my chores my mom would ground me from the latest book I was reading. So instead of taking away my allowance or not letting me see my friends, she would raid my bookshelf to leave me in sorrow. :D

Like a few others it's my addiction to reading that has gotten me into a few scrapes. My youngest daughter and I both love to read and my grandson was staying for the night with us and he was coloring and both my daughter and I were reading . He turned around and saw us and said "no, you can't read" I don't want to be by myself. lol I guess he's used to us both being zoned out when we're reading. Another time he had his Mom call and see if we'd go to the park with them and in the background he yelled "they can't bring their books either" lol

I always thought I was alone with my book addiction. I too have read while cooking supper and burnt it. When my sons were younger, I would be late in picking them up from school. I can't say that I forgot to eat because I would make my food and then eat while I read. I missed taking the bus to work, had to wait for the next one and arrived late for work. But on the plus side of that one, I was able to read for another hour while I waited for the bus to arrive :-)
