The "I'm Moving" Contest

Summer is slowly wasting away.  The days aren't quite as long as they used to be and the worst of the blistering heat has faded.  I've handed in the revised version of the second book in the Asylum Tales and I've started to turn my attention toward other projects.

But before I can settled behind my desk again, I've got to pack it all up.  Yes, I am moving from my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.  My darling Other Half and I are headed north to Wisconsin.  We will be headed up there at the end of the month (assuming that I can find a place to live).

The moving process means that I will be packing up the contents of my house.  While I was sorting through my boxes in the library/armory, I discovered that I have THREE boxes of my books for the Dark Days series.  Most are either book five (WAIT FOR DUSK) and book six (BURN THE NIGHT), but I have a handful of books 2-4.

The fact is, I don't want to want to move all those boxes of books.  I've already got lots of books that are written by other amazing authors that I want to take north.  Should I take my own?  Nah.  I think I should give them to you.  Would you like a signed book?  Cool!  I can help with that.

Here's what I need you to do.  Leave me a comment on this blog with your name and which book you would like.

You can choose from:

Dayhunter (book 2)
Dawnbreaker (book 3)
Pray for Dawn (book 4)
Wait for Dusk (book 5)
Burn the Night (book 6)

(sorry, I am all out of copies of Nightwalker -- book1)

Rules:
Leave a comment before midnight on Friday, August  10.
Please, U.S. residents only.  (I will have an international contest later this month)
I will choose 10 winners using a random number generator.
Come back on Saturday to find out if you won.

Also, you want to help me out some more.  I will happily accept any moving advice that you can give.  I've moved across town, but never a long distance with a dog and two cats.  Have you moved a far distance?  Have you moved with animals?  Got any advice for me?  Leave me a little advice.  Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I'd like book2 or if you run out of that book three. Thanks.

If you can take anything you will need right after you move in the car with you. I once had a moving truck break down and my stuff showed up a day late.

Moving is always fun and stressful. traveling with pets, just give yourself extra time and plan for many stops. If your pets like the car that is a bonus(mine never do). Best of luck in your move.

I would love a copy Wait for Dusk!!!

Thanks for the contest.

I know how you are feeling right now. I've been moving most of my life. I hope I don't have to move again for a long time.

I'd love book 4, 5, or 6 to go with my autographed copies of books 1, 2, and 3.

Moving advice: If your animals are not microchipped, get it done - NOW. It's too easy for a pet to get lost on a move. Also, have all pets (cats and dog) on leash or crated BEFORE ever opening a door. Do plan lots of stops - the animals will need more frequent potty breaks. If your cats will accept a leash, giving them a chance to stretch their legs will do much toward making the trip more pleasant for everyone.

We moved cross country when I was a teen, and one of my favorite memories of the move was walking my dog and cat (both on leash) thru the battleground at Vicksburg.

I have only moved 8 miles with my cats and it was horrible! We had to put them in pillow cases because we did not have enough cat carriers. They hated it! Good Luck on your move!

I would like a copy of Burn the Night (Book 6)!! :) Thanks!

Good luck with your move. It is a big undertaking to move. I would suggest labeling each box with detailed descriptions. It is easier to find stuff that way.
I would be happy to have any of your books. :)

Would love to win book 6. I really don't have any advice about moving since I only moved once 26 years ago when I got married. I was 17 so only had a bedroom to move. If I moved now, I think I'd just leave everything and start over. Yes, I have that much stuff!

Good luck with move.

I've moved so many times that by the time I was 18 I had lived in 18 different places. My best advice for moving is to pack all large items (like furniture)in the truck first.

Pray for Dawn book 4. That's the only one I don't have signed! ;)

I don't have much advice. The only time I ever moved was when I was 6 or 7 and we only went up the street!

Good luck with the move. Your dog will probably adjust better than your cats because dogs go with the humans but cats go with the house. Leashes for all the pets would probably be a good idea especially if you will stop along the way.

I would love a copy of PRAY FOR DAWN but WAIT FOR DUSK is good, too. Thank you.

Dayhunter! :D

Good luck on the move. As far as the advice in general... I guess it would be to keep to routine as close as possible.

Hmmm. I have never moved long distances with a pet, just myself and the hubs. But maybe the same thing applies as when you get a new puppy? Keep their blanket/toy with and make them a nice little spot in the new house? If youre really up for a challenge you could potty train your cats, a friend from work just trained hers. Maybe before you leave the old house =) hehehe
Good luck with the move! I hope it goes smoothly!

Thanks for sharing your welath of books!!! I would love to get Dayhunter....or Wait for Dusk....I can't decide!!!

Dear Jocelynn,

As I said before, you will be missed in Ohio. I've never been able to attend a signing you might have held due to lack of a car, so I would love to win a signed book now. Any of them would be fine, but I would love to have book 6. Burn the Night was one hell of a finale and that's what I would love to have a signed copy of. Well, I hope you have a successful move and that nothing goes awry.

I have moved with our dog never a cat. If they ride well it shouldn't be too hard. Keep them cool and calm. If they have a special toy keep it in the car with them. Good luck with the new job.

I would love to win any book you have, love them all.

I'm so excited for you guys. I hope the moving goes well. :)

Hmm...I think I would like either the 2 or 3rd books. Though honestly it'd be awesome to have a whole set signed. but any would be lovely to add to my book collection.

Stacy Detty here and any book will do!

As for moving with your pets make sure to lay some old towels or blankets down. My sister and her husband moved and one of her dogs got sick a few times. Safe travels when you move.

Thank you.

Happy Moving! Be prepared for plenty of breaks for your fur babies to be able to stretch and such. Lots of patience. I would love Book 5 or 6. Thank you so much!

I would love to have one of the low numbered books (2 or 3 would be great). Hint wise, I would say make sure to pack the necessities (personal hygiene, household, at least a couple days worth of clothing, enough dishes/cooking implements to last a couple of days) and put these in your personal vehicle marked special. You will also need to include anything needed for either children or fur babies too.

Hi! I would love a copy of Burn the Night!

My advice for moving with kitties would be to get some comfort zone ( from a pet store, online or at your vet) - it is extra calming for them. I would spray it in their carriers and all over your new house once you get there. I would also put one of your shirts in the carrier with them so they have something that really smells like you. Micro chip for sure too...it shouldn't cost much and doesn't take long...and then lots of extra hugs and kisses once you get to your new place:)

Have safe and happy travels!!

Wait for dusk,. Pretty please?

heeza said...

I would like:
Dayhunter (book 2)
Dawnbreaker (book 3)
Pray for Dawn (book 4)
Wait for Dusk (book 5)
Burn the Night (book 6)

Too many... oh alright, Book 2 or Book 5 please.

Moving advice: Clearly label your boxes! Put the room the box belongs in and what is in the box. Put critical items on the truck last, so they are the first to be removed; such as dishes, cooking ware, cleaning supplies, etc. You get the idea. Oh and clothes are heavier then you think when you start to box them up, so don't fill the boxes too full otherwise you may need a forklift to move it. LOL! Happy packing!!

Wait for Dusk book 5 I have the first 4 and am half way through with reading that one I love this series

Nyx said...

id like a copy of book 6 i own all the others :-)

the only advice i can give is make sure to fill the boxes full before tapping them up. if you dont while the truck is jostling around the boxes that werent complety full will buckle and might caise everything to shift and fall. also before you close and lock the truck to leave toss in a couple bug bombs then lock it tight. this will make sure that no creepy critters follow you from your old house to the new one. also if your taking a uhaul truck and you have to go over mountains or are planning on hauling a vehicle behind you.... make sure to have extra money for gas. the big trucks do NOT like going up the mountain roads and it burns a lot of gas. i moved from virginia to oklahoma and i was towing my car behind us.... it was a pain. oh and if a gas station doesnt have and area where you can pull through to get gas....find somewhere else. tryinh to back one of them buggers up is a PAIN.

good luck on your move.

Since I have the first three, I'd love a copy of any of the later books -
Pray for Dawn (book 4)
Wait for Dusk (book 5)
Burn the Night (book 6)

I moved from California to Florida in a U-Haul truck driven by my son. We ended up being given a smaller truck than expected, so had to leave a few things behind, but not any books. :D I had three cats, and I flew them to Florida where my daughter-in-law picked them up and took them to a boarding facility to await my arrival. That worked out pretty well, so I don't know how it would be taking the animals along for the ride. My advice to a long distance move is have some fun along the way. We stopped in Phoenix and visited a small amusement park, and in San Antonio visited SeaWorld, and we enjoyed the scenery all along the route, especially through New Orleans. Good luck!

My advice burn it and start all over! At least that is what my husband and I have sworn we are going to do after our last move 10 years ago when our movers showed up late looking like they just got out of a bar fight. We ended up having to move ourselves. We barely got it all out before the new owner showed up the next morning at 7AM.

Good luck!

Good luck with moving! Sometimes getting meds for the fur babies is a good idea. Alprazolam or Acepromazine are great. I kept little brown bags in the car because one of my cats gets carsick and i would have to hold his head in the bag while he urped up his food/stomach acid, etc. Good luck!

Also, book 3 would be awesome if you pick my comment. :) <3

I have moved many times over the the last few years. I have 2 young kids, and 3 cats, 2 dogs. I have learned that just take your time and make sure that you get to your destination with all of your belongings as well as your pets.
I would love to have any of the books since I just started to read Nightwalker and would love to read the rest as well.

I'd love Book 2 or Book 3, if you run out of Dayhunter. Moving requires organization. Label the box with the room it belongs to & only put things from that room in there. When the box is unloaded, it goes to the room it belongs in so you don't have to move it yourself later to unpack. Hope it goes well for you!

I'd love book 6, or any book that you have left.

As for advice, I totally HATE moving. I moved 3 times in one year once and I got so tired of moving that I just threw away everything but the essentials. So my advice is if you can live without it, don't take it. Happy moving!

it would be easiest if you had a way of kenneling the dogs or having someone take care of them till you get moved in. that way the door isn't always opening and closing. Good luck with the move!

donnas said...

I would pick Dawnbreaker only one I dont have my own copy of.

I used to move a lot, with 2 cats. I learned be ready for a lot of last minute work, no matter how you plan they will be loading the truck and you will be filling the last box. You can never have too many boxes. If you think you have enough get 5 more. And lock the cats in the bathroom. Also while it is cheaper to move yourself. Never underestimate the benefits of professional movers that will also box your TV. Ive done it both ways across town and it was the easiest and less stressful one. My cross state move was with family helping and it was a lot more work (stress).

Moving is horrible. The last time I moved I SWORE I was going to burn it all...except one sock. I'm willing to take that one sock with me.

Now I find we may be being deployed overseas and am considering whether to burn, sell or just give away. Too many horror stories of overseas shipping.

Gah!! I fell your pain!!

You are one of my favorite authors by the way. I've loved ALL of your books. Thank you for sharing!!
