Cover Art Lead-In For Kim Falconer's New Series  Ascension (Working Title)

Kim tells us

"Even though my release date for the new, Young Adult Fantasy series, Ascension (working title), is 12 months off, my publisher at Entangled Teen has sent me the ‘cover art’ form.

It’s extensive, asking about the mood, themes and sub-sub-sub genres the book might be linked to, all the way to character studies and specific references. There’s a section to put links to cover art mood boards, like the one I’ve been making on Pinterest -
.

https://au.pinterest.com/kimdfalconer/cover-art-mood-board-for-ascension/

And, I’m asked to include an extensive list of covers I like and why, what elements grab me. What don’t.

Also, they ask what I don’t want on the cover. I said, “No unicorns or pole dancers.”

We should be safe, given there are neither unicorns or pole dancers in the story, but believe it or not, this happened to Karen Miller, an author friend of mine. She sold rights to her fantasy series (I think it was The Riven Kingdom) to Russia and, you guessed it, they put both a unicorn AND a pole dancer on the cover. No, the story wasn’t remotely about either...

Which leads to the purpose of the cover  to intrigue the shopper to pick up the book, read the blurb and buy it!

Meanwhile, I am immersed in cover art, and loving it. There are so many beautiful books out there!"

Great news, Kim. Here at Supernatural Underground HQ we're looking forward to the Ascension series  and we're sure the cover will rock!

Stina Leicht's Blackthorne (The Malorum Gates) Is Out!

Stina Leicht's Blackthorne  a Flintlock Fantasy   was published on 8 August and already has a fab review from reviewer Kelly Anderson on B&N's SciFi & Fantasy Blog:

"...nail-biting thrills of the hunt—when the prey is human lives, and the stakes are extinction... I definitely want to find out what happens next, and you will too."
.
It sounds like a great read so if you want to to curl up with some Flintlock Fantasy, Stina's series could be just what you're looking for  although the first in the series is Cold Iron.

Introducing Teresa Frohock: A Very Warm Welcome To The Supernatural Underground, Teresa!

.

Welcome, Teresa Frohock
Today, I am delighted to welcome Teresa Frohock as a new member of the Supernatural Underground.

Teresa will be posting with us on the 30th of every month, so I hope you will join me in giving her a warm Supernatural Underground welcome to our community.

But first off, I must introduce her to you properly...

Teresa hails from North Carolina where she has long been accused of telling stories, which she tells me is a southern colloquialism for lying. She is also an author who has turned a love of dark fantasy and horror into tales of deliciously creepy fiction.

I first encountered Teresa in 2013, initially through the medium of her novel, Miserere: An Autumn Tale (Nightshade, 2011), a supernatural fantasy with overtones of horror that I enjoyed very much.

So I was very excited when I learned that Teresa had a novella series, Los Nefilim, being published through Voyager Impulse -- and in fact the first book, In Midnight's Silence, has been recently released.

It look's intriguing, doesn't it? You can read the synopsis and first chapter here:
.

Los Nefilim: The Fate Of Mankind Has Nothing To Do With Mankind …

And learn more about Teresa and her writing here:
.
I am sure it will make you eager to  check out her first post with us on September 30 – and welcome her to the Supernatural Underground in person.

In the meantime, to bridge your wait, here are links to early reviews of In Midnight's Silence:

Touchstones: What Your Supernatural Underground Authors "Just Can't Do Without" When We're Writing!

.
Throughout July our Supernatural Underground authors have been updating you on what's happening and what's hot in our writing lives right now.

And wow, wasn't it exciting just to find out just how much is hubbling and bubbling behind the scenes!

In amongst the other August happenings, we thought it might be fun to talk about some of our writing "touchstones" — those artifacts, or processes, accompaniments or spaces we "just can't do without" when the muse is driving us to write, write, write...

So watch this space as August rolls around — I think we're going to have some Supernatural Underground posting fun!

Announcing Supernatural Underground Update Month!

.
We've all just passed the solstice, and whether the zenith (summer!) or nadir (winter!) of the year, all the crew here at the Supernatural Underground feel it's the very best time to update you on where we're all at with our book projects, writing, or other exciting "Supernatural" events.

So expect to see all your regular Supernatural Underground authors checking in this month to tell you where they're at and what's the current big project in their writing lives.

I heard there might be a few giveaways in the mix as well, so watch this space!

And because we're a team here, we thought it might be fun to have a bit more synchronicity to the monthly post round, so look out for the occasional — or regular — appearance of Supernatural Underground "themes" over the next half year.

I don't know about you but I'm excited I think we're going to have a great July, with an even better second half of 2013 ahead!
